Detectives have arrested and detained a man and woman suspected to be producing locally made pornographic films sold in video stores across the country.
The suspects, including Ssenga Mariam Ndibasa, a renowned traditional sex educationist, are detained at Central Police Station in Kampala.
Ssenga Ndibasa told police her original sex education film didn’t have pornographic materials. She said film pirates reproduced one with illegal content and she had earlier opened a criminal case at police against pirating her films.
Head of media crimes, Mr Simon Kuteesa, said some of the pornographic films in their possession were produced in Uganda by Ugandans.
“One male suspect in our cells has led us to one of the actors in the films. The good thing is that the prime suspect is in Luzira Prisons over a totally different offence. We are going to talk him,” Mr Kuteesa said.
The prime suspect’s face was captured in the film while the faces of the women he was having sex with were cropped. Detectives now want him to help them identify the women in the pornographic films for possible arrest and charge.
Section 13 of the Anti-pornography Act makes it illegal for a person to produce, traffic, publish any form of pornography and on conviction is liable to a fine of Shs10m or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years.
Since November last year, the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate and the Ethics and Integrity Ministry have intensified their hunt for people trafficking in pornography.
In December, Ms Justine Nantume, a renowned sex educationist and a broadcast presenter, was questioned over trafficking in pornography.
Nearly two months ago, local musician Jemimah Kansiime also known as Panadol Wabasajja was charged for promoting pornography in her new song ‘Nkulinze’ loosely translated as ‘I am waiting for you’. She was released on bail pending her trial.
Her promoter Mr March Didi Muchwa Mugisha alias Producer Didi was convicted for promoting pornography and fined Shs 200,000.
