Ema Mutale, a Ugandan native, was born to Mr. John Kafifi and Mrs. Florence Nakayenga in
Kamuli district. From an early age, it was evident that Ema possessed a natural talent for
music. He would later become known as a versatile musician who could perform seven
different genres with ease.
At the age of 8, Ema's musical journey began when he joined the Kamuli Community Brass
& Jazz Band, a non-profit community organization based in Lubaga, Kamuli District. It was
within this band that Ema discovered his passion for playing the piano. His dedication and
commitment to mastering the instrument quickly made him a virtuoso, captivating
audiences with his skill and musicality.
However, Ema Mutale's hunger for artistic expression led him to pursue a solo career
outside the confines of the band. In 2010, during his P.7 vocation, he officially launched his
professional music career, determined to make a name for himself in the industry. It is
worth noting that even before his official debut, Ema's siblings recall his love for music
dating back to his primary school days. He would often write rhymes for fun, foreshadowing
his future as a songwriter.
The early years of Ema's solo career were not without their hardships. One incident that
remains etched in his memory occurred in 2010 while trying to promote his single,
"Nkwagalira ddala" (meaning "I Love You So Much"). Ema approached Rocky, a radio
presenter at Kiira FM, and entrusted him with a CD of the song along with 50,000 Ugandan
shillings to support its promotion. Shockingly, Rocky destroyed the CD by breaking it into
two pieces and threw it at Ema, causing an injury to his forehead.
Another setback arose when Ema Mutale arrived at a performance to showcase his talents.
Mr. Detacha, who was a musician at the time who is now a radio presenter at Galaxy FM,
threw a microphone at Ema as he stepped onto the stage. Unfortunately, the microphone
struck Ema's mouth, momentarily preventing him from performing.
Despite these obstacles, Ema's love for music and determination remained steadfast. In
2014, a pivotal moment occurred when he composed the "Umbrella Song" for the National
Unity Platform (NUP), a prominent political party in Uganda. Recognizing the party's need
for a powerful anthem, Ema felt compelled to fill that void and contribute to NUP's political
expression and mobilization efforts.
This decision marked a turning point in Ema's life, as he resolved to return to the recording
studio after a seven-year hiatus from the music industry. Though he had experienced
disappointment and disillusionment in the past, his passion for music and the potential it
held to unite and effect change drove him forward.
With renewed purpose, Ema Mutale immersed himself in the creative process once again.
He poured his heart and soul into composing a song that would encapsulate the spirit and
values of NUP. The "Umbrella Song" became a labor of love, an expression of his
unwavering belief in the power of music to inspire and bring about positive transformation.
Ema's journey continues as he navigates the challenges and triumphs of his musical
endeavors. He is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to NUP's mission through his art,
and he remains hopeful that his song will resonate with the party and its supporters. As he

How Ema Mutale came up with the Umbrella Song
One evening, while I was in a taxi on my way home to Namungoona, an idea struck me like
lightning, an idea that would forever change the course of my life! It was an abstract
concept, a thought that whispered in my ear. I realized that the National Unity Platform
(NUP), one of the prominent political parties in Uganda, lacked something essential—a song.
Despite its close association with the music scene, NUP had yet to embrace the power of
music as a tool for political expression and mobilization. And in that moment, I felt
compelled to compose a song for NUP, to fill that void and contribute to the party's
momentum.
However, this decision did not come without its share of personal apprehension and
uncertainty. After all, it had been seven long years since I had set foot in a recording studio,
having previously called it quits on my singing career. The challenges and disappointments I
faced while trying to promote my first release in 2010 during my P7 vocation had left me
disillusioned and disheartened. But despite these setbacks, the spark of passion ignited
within me once again, urging me to overcome my fears and doubts.
With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, I made the decision to return to the recording
room. I knew that stepping back into the realm of music would not be an easy task. It
would require perseverance, dedication, and a renewed belief in my abilities. But deep
down, I felt a sense of purpose, a conviction that this was the path I was meant to follow.
As I embarked on this journey, I reflected on my past experiences and how they shaped me
as an artist. I remembered the joy and fulfillment that music brought to my life, the
moments of connection and inspiration it sparked in others. I realized that my passion for
music was not something that could be easily extinguished. It was a part of who I was,
ingrained in my soul.
With this newfound determination, I immersed myself in the creative process once more. I
poured my heart and soul into composing a song that would encapsulate the spirit and
values of NUP. It was a labor of love, an expression of my unwavering belief in the power of
music to unite, inspire, and effect change.
And so, my journey continues as I navigate the challenges and triumphs of this musical
endeavor. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to NUP's mission through my art,
and I remain hopeful that my song will resonate with the party and its supporters. As I step
back into the spotlight, I am reminded that sometimes, our greatest achievements come
from embracing our passions, overcoming obstacles, and never giving up on our dreams.
