95% of all pregnant women that are found to be HIV positive are all on treatment, according to the outgoing Executive Director United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) Musa Bungudu.

Mr. Bugudu was this morning addressing the press at the Uganda media center in Kampala on the status of HIV in Uganda.

Bungudu recognized the US government, Global Fund, clergy, CSOs for the support offered in the fight against HIV/AIDS arguing that Uganda was singled out as the most performing country in this response.

He also thanked President Museveni who has provided credible leadership to support all Ugandans together with the first lady so that by next year, there should not be any baby born with HIV/AIDS.

He explains that almost 88% or even 90% of HIV infection is a result of unprotected sex. He cautioned the youth to avoid indiscriminate sex that is everywhere.

According to Bungudu, in 2011, overall Infections in the country were 160,000 compared to 83,000 of December, a tremendous reduction.

Majority of new HIV/AIDS infections have been registered in Wakiso district, and girls have almost tripled the boys.

“The girls have almost tripled the boys, but when they reach the age of 20 they come at per. A new HIV Status survey is already underway. I can tell you we are not at 6% but we are around 4.9%.” Said Bungudu
