The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen Geoffrey Tumusiime Kasigazi, is on a tour of Lango to evaluate the security situation in the sub-region due to persistent cattle raids by Karamojong cattle rustlers.

His visit began with a closed-door meeting with all the District Police Commanders and other leaders in the region, followed by plans to meet all the Resident District Commissioners in Lango to find a lasting solution to the cattle raids. According to police reports, there have been 273 cases of stolen cattle in the last four months.

Maj. Gen Tumusiime's visit aims not only to address the cattle rustling problem but also to evaluate the welfare and performance of the police. He believes that the inadequate manpower and mode of deployment are contributing to the persistence of cattle raids in the sub-region. Plans to recruit and support more personnel are underway to combat rustling in the region.

To counter the Karamojong cattle rustlers who cross over to disturb the locals, joint security forces, including Uganda Police Officers, UPDF, and Anti-Stock Theft Unit, have deployed at the Otuke-Abim border.

The UPDF has deployed adequate manpower at Alir in Ogwete sub-county, Otuke District, believed to be the entry point of the Karamojong cattle rustlers. During a patrol, one rustler was killed in action by UPDF officers, and two locals were injured while defending their animals.
