The Government of Uganda, in collaboration with the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Nordic Development Fund, is set to conduct an 18-month extensive aerial survey of minerals in the Lake Kyoga basin. The survey is part of a five-year project aimed at identifying and mapping mineral resources in the region.

The aerial surveys will be conducted in Kwania, Apac, Dokolo, Amolatar, Kaberamaido, and Nakasongola Districts. This comes after the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development conducted surveys on the Moroto Kadam basin and plans are underway to do a survey on the Lake Kyoga basin.

Joshua Lukaye, the Acting Assistant Commissioner from the Directorate of Petroleum in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, addressed Kwania district leaders at the Kwania District Headquarters on Wednesday and appealed for support from the local leaders and community members during the exercise.

Abongomola Sub-county female councilor Dorcus Agweng believes that the discovery of minerals in Kwania will boost local revenue and improve service delivery in the district. Kwania LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Alex Ogwal Adyebo welcomed the development and asked the locals to render necessary support to the team.

It's worth noting that in 1994, the government conducted mineral surveys in the Albertine region, Karamoja, and Lake Kyoga basin and found minerals around lake regions in the districts of Dokolo, Amolatar, Kwania, Apac, Buyende, and Nakasongola, among others.
