At least 20 people have so far been confirmed dead in the Mbale city floods after ten more bodies were recovered this morning from River Nabuyonga in Mbale City Industrial Division.

The 10 newly found bodies are of a group that was traveling in a super custom, which plunged into the river following the heavy rains that hit the town on Saturday evening.

It is alleged that they were heading to the Kabwangasi sub-county in Butebo district from Kampala for an introduction ceremony.

Police together with residents have teamed up to retrieve the super custom from the river but efforts have taken longer due to the lack of equipment. The police and residents were using ropes to pull the vehicle from the river.

One of those who helped to retrieve the bodies said that they had managed to pull out 8 bodies.

Ahamda Washaki the Mbale City Resident Commissioner, told the Prime Minister on Sunday that there are fears that many more people could have died from the floods and are their bodies still in the water. He added that there is a need to deploy the Police Marine Unit to search for the missing bodies.
