Uganda Traffic Police Spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima, says in the past five weeks alone, 435 people died and 1,300 were injured as a result of road accidents.

While reading the latest traffic report, Nampiima said the month of June recorded 366 deaths from road crashes and 1,146 critical injuries.

Nampiima also says 69 people have since perished in road crashes in the last nine days of July, meaning on average, 87 people die on the road each week and 12 each day as a result of vehicle, motorcycle, or bicycle crashes.

On Saturday 3 died in a vicious accident at Kinawataka Railway crossing after a train crashed into them. Two have since been identified as Caroline Aturinda and Nobert Tezikara.

Nampiima has attributed the Kinawataka crash to reckless driving.

Another crash that killed 10 people happened on Bombo road. The victims were netballers from Bwaise but no one has come out to claim ownership of the taxi. The reported cause of the crash was a tyre burst.
