Police in Jinja City has dispersed crowds of Boda Boda riders with live bullets and teargas for staging a protest over high fuel prices.

The motorcyclists scattered at various trading centers blocking roads with logs and car tires that were set ablaze.

The protests were largely held in the trading centers of Mafubira, Namulesa, Wakitaka, Nakabango, Nsuube, Muguluka and Buwenge.

Police were compelled to fire tear gas and bullets at a crowd that converged at the Jinja-Kamuli highway, pelting stones at security personnel while burning tires and bringing traffic to a standstill.

The protestors also attacked their colleagues who had failed to join them. The angered cyclists claim legislators have failed to address their concerns on fuel which is having a ripple effect on providing for their families.

The Kiira regional police spokesperson, James Mubi says that footage retrieved from their highway CCTV cameras shows a numberless saloon car making stopovers at different points along the Jinja-Kamuli highway and issuing whistles, vuvuzelas, and old tires, among other unidentified items to random motorcyclists with the aim of aiding the protest.

He says preliminary information suggests that selected  individuals are employing motorcyclists to fuel the protest.
