A Police officer who locked his mother inside the house and set it ablaze over the weekend, will be subjected to a mental health checkup before charges can be sanctioned against him.

In the wee hours of Saturday, 38-year-old Assistant Superintendent of Police Edward Bua reportedly burnt his mother Margaret Nyakuni Onzia, a 66-year-old who was working as deputy director Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council and a resident of Bugonga in Entebbe, to death.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman ASP Luke Owoyesigyire told the media that Police preliminary findings indicated that ASP Bua locked his mother inside the bedroom before locking the main house and later setting it ablaze.

Owoyesigyire however says that the suspect who is still detained at Entebbe Police station will have to first undergo a mental medical checkup within this week.

The medical results will then be used to determine the proper charges that will be sanctioned against him.

The suspect is currently being held on charges of murder by arson. The results will be attached to his file, and forwarded to the resident state attorney for perusal and advice.
