Court Martial remands 61 attackers of UPDF barracks in Zombo District

The General Court Martial at Makindye has charged and remanded to Kitalya Government Prison 61 suspects who were arrested for attacks on the Uganda People’s Defense Forces barracks in Zombo district.

The General Court Martial at Makindye has charged and remanded to Kitalya Government Prison 61 suspects who were arrested for attacks on the Uganda People’s Defense Forces barracks in Zombo district.  

The suspects had earlier been arraigned before the 4th Division Court Martial in Gulu district at different intervals on charges of treason, following their arrests from Packwach, Zombo, and Arua district.

They are charged with the deaths of five soldiers in an attack that took place on March 6, 2020, and another in July 2021. 

The suspects appeared before the General Court Martial at Makindye on Tuesday where they pleaded not guilty, prompting the Court-Martial Chairperson Lt General Andrew Gutti to remand them to Kitalya until January 4th 2022. 

six people and a Uganda People’s Defence Forces-UPDF soldier were killed in Zeu sub-county during the July attack. 
The detach located in Zeu forest was attacked by unknown gunmen around 6:00 am. 20 men disguising as forest workers entered Zombo district through Zeu forest and attacked the detach.

The same group armed with machetes, bows, and arrows raided a Uganda People’s Defense Forces [UPDF] detach in Oduk village in 2020. Five soldiers were killed in the attack, while nine huts were razed down and three AK47 assault rifles looted from the army detach by the attackers.

Those who were killed include Corporal Godfrey Oola, Privates Oyuthu Solomon Owete and Bosco Okol, Warrant Officer Two Patrick Ondongota, Lance Corporal Godfrey Timba.
