The National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO Bureau) under the Ministry of Internal Affairs that is mandated to register, regulate, monitor, inspect, coordinate and oversee all NGO operations in the country, has condemned the undertakings of Maya Project Uganda Chapter, an organization that was found trafficking minors.

The Bureau has now revealed that Maya Project Uganda Chapter is NOT a registered NGO with the NGO Bureau.

On Tuesday 20th July, 2021, officers from Uganda Police Force rescued 14 girls from a guest house in Muyenga, Makindye Division in Kampala, where they were allegedly going to be trafficked through an alleged Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) called Maya.

“The NGO Bureau recognises and appreciates the contribution of genuine organizations and requests all NGOs to ensure that they are operating within the ambit of the law and relevant regulations. Equally, all stakeholders and the general public are hereby requested to desist engaging with NGOs that are not registered with the NGO Bureau and are therefore operating illegally” Okello Steohen the Executive DirectorNGO Bureau says.

The Deputy PRO KMP, Luke Owoyesigyire noted last week, that the organization was closed, the owner arrested and the children taken to a shelter, where their parents were asked to go get them.
