There is panic in the Kyangwali Refugee settlement after 12 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Kikuube district. This brings to 33, the number of people who have tested positive for Covid19 in the refugee settlement and one death.

Kikuube Resident District Commissioner-RDC Richard Tabaro says the twelve new Covid19 cases are part of the 98 people whose COVID-19 test results were released by the Health Ministry on Wednesday.

They are currently isolated at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for specialized medical management.

Bunyoro Regional COVID-19 Task force committee on Wednesday, announced a total lock down of Kyangwali refugee settlement area due to the surging number of cases.

The task force resolved that no one will be allowed to enter or leave the settlement area within the next two weeks. All forms of business in Kyangwali settlement area have also been banned

The first group of refugees tested positive after the death of a Congolese refugee in the settlement area on August 8, 2020. The 27-year-old male refugee was a resident of Maratatu Village in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement area.

Kyangwali Refugee settlement is home to more than 120,072 refugees, according to Uganda-Refugee Statistics as of June 2020.
