Teachers in the district of Kasese have been accused of subjecting pupils and students to corporal punishment, despite the massive awareness about the vice.

According to Mondo Kyateka the Assistant Commissioner for Youth and Children Affairs in the Gender, Labour and Social Development Ministry, Kasese is among the top districts where instructors use corporal punishment to discipline learners.

Kyateka who was speaking during a meeting organized by Spotlight Initiative in Kasese on Wednesday said that most teachers administer corporal punishment or subject learners to hard labor, which instills fear and limits their interaction with others.

The commissioner warned teachers to stop this forthwith or the Ministry brings them to book.

Senior Kasese District Probation and Social Welfare Officer Sowedi Kitanywa urged teachers to adhere to the guidelines issued by government on how to discipline errant learners.

According to Kitanywa, there are huge gaps in enforcing the government directive but, he is optimistic that they will do whatever it takes to end corporal punishment.

Kasese District is among the 7 districts in which Spotlight Initiative is zealously extending sensitisation programs against violation of women and promoting girl child rights, Cathryn Wilkes, a Gender Specialist with United Nations, says.
