Drama ensued in Mbale on Monday morning as Police and members of the Forum for the Democratic Change-FDC engaged in a verbal exchange that resulted in the arrest of party chairperson Margret Wokuri.

Police deployed heavily earlier this morning at Mpumude playground in Mbale municipality to block FDC Members from holding a belated 15th Anniversary celebration for the party.

On December 06, 2019, FDC marked 15 years, with national celebrations at Mandela National Stadium-Namboole, though party members in Mbale had planned to hold a regional celebration of the same today, only to be blocked on grounds that the organizers did not have police clearance.

John Robert Tukei the Elgon Police Spokesperson argues that while the group had written to the Inspector General of Police about the meeting, they were never cleared for a celebration in their venue of choice.

However, the Senior Assistant Town Clerk Martin Busiku says they requested for Mpumude playground and were granted permission in a letter dated January 14.

Wasswa Birigwa the FDC National Chairperson also condemned police for interfering with their activities, arguing that the party follows the law to hold assemblies as prescribed in the Public Order Management Act.
