The electoral comission will ensure that the rights of journalists are respected during the 2021 general elections, the EC says.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day dialogue at Hotel Africana in Kampala this morning, Stephen Tashobya a member of the electoral comission who represented the chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, said that the safety of journalists during any election is taken as a priority by the commission.
Today's dialogue is being held under the theme; Media and elections: Mainstreaming Journalism Safety and Ethics in the election cycle."

Tashobya told journalists this morning that the commission has put in place measures to ensure journalists exercise their rights during elections. 

"We have establishes aedia and public relations department to plan and maintain relationships with the media. We are also training election officials and imparting them with information so that they are able to help journalists when they need it" he said.

The commissioner added that they are holding workshops with journalists to increase awareness especially on the areas of coverage. The commission is also training security officers on the rights of media as key stakeholders.

He advises jousnalists to work hand in hand with other stakeholders to avoid any altercations during elections. And ensure their safety during the upcoming elections.
Tomorrow, journalists will hold a processon in town to Golf Course Hotel where they will hold the main event of the World Press Freedom day.

The activities have been organized by the Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda and the Uganda journalists Association.
