Residents of Onea A village in Norah Trading Centre in Kamdini Sub County in Oyam district are in fear after stray elephants from Murchison Falls national Game Park attacked and killed an expectant mother.

The victim is a 33-year-old Dorcus Awino who was killed last night. According to Moses Ogwok the deceased’s husband, the Awino who was six months pregnant was on her way to the trading center when she was killed by the stray elephants.

Police handed over Awino’s death to the family for burial after postmortem at Anyeke Health Centre IV.

The Oyam District Police Commander Victor Saasi Kule says the stray elephants numbering about six invaded Aber and Kamdini Sub Counties on Saturday night and also injured Denis Oryang, a Primary Five pupil at Aber P.7 School in Aber Sub County.

He adds that a team of game rangers from Murchison Falls National Game Park have since managed to push the animals from the area.

The Oyam Resident District Commissioner Jillian Akullo urged residents to remain vigilant, saying many elephants are believed to have escaped from the park due to the prolonged dry season.
