The Makerere University Academic Staff Association-MUASA chairperson Dr. Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu, has expressed disgust and said that lecturers are upset by sexual harassment scandals in the media, involving one of their own.
The development comes after a senior lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration (SWSA), one Dr. Swizen Kyomuhendo, was accused in a story that aired on NBS Television of sexually exploiting female students in exchange for marks.
The ‘senior lecturer’ Dr Kyomuhendo, is seen in a video luring one of his students to a lodge to have "some fun" in a lodge. The victim told the press that this lecturer had promised to adjust her marks if she 'collaborated.' The lecturer however denied engaging in any act of sexual harassment when the TV reporter sought him out on phone for a comment. He is set to appear before a probe committee looking into his matter today, to explain how he got into such a mess.
Now, Dr. Kamunyu describes as 'monstrous' and 'destructive' the alleged sexual harassment acts, disclosing that the lecturers are 'upset' due to such reports.
The MUASA Chairman adds that what happened to Dr. Kyomuhendo should serve as a warning to all staff on where and how they choose to transact their businesses. He says it was demeaning of a senior lecturer to be captured in such a place.
He however says that although this taints the university image, it points the university on action areas for instance strengthening necessary institutions to detect at an early stage these acts.
Dr. Kamunyu argues that MUASA is ready to work with everyone to ensure that all processes are followed to ensure justice is delivered to all those affected by such acts.
