Members and leaders of different civil society organizations have demanded for respect of members of parliament from other arms of government.

The call was made at the ongoing civil society debate, which is part of the Parliament week activities. The debate was opened by speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, with a tour of exhibition stalls.

In her opening remarks, the speaker said there’s need to conduct a massive awareness campaign on the role of parliament, the roles of MPs and governance issues.

Dr. Margaret Ssekagya, the Executive Director for the Human Rights Centre said effective representation depends on the respect of rights of MPs. “Mps should be protected from threats and intimidation to be effective” Dr Ssekagya added.

Gimara Frank, the president Uganda law society says Parliament has a very loud voice in the constitution and legislators should redeem it. He argues that “this is the only Parliament we have.”

DP President Norbert Mao asked Parliament to ensure participatory democracy.
