There is a heavy police deployment in Rukungiri as Dr. Kiiza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party president and three other FDC leaders are expected to appear before Borore Kyaka, the Rukungiri Chief Magistrate this morning.

Besigye’s co accused are; Ingrid Turinawe, the FDC Women League Chairperson, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the former Kumi County MP and FDC presidential candidate and Rukungiri municipality deputy speaker, Innocent Tashobya.

According to Ely Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the troubled leaders were airlifted from Nagalama Police Station in Mukono district last evening to Rukungiri district. Maate says the chopper carrying the suspects touched down at 06:48pm.

They are wanted for murder, malicious damage to property and inciting violence among others. Police spokesperson, Asan Kasingye told this website last evening that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions-DPP had sanctioned the file of the four of politicians.

"The file was sanctioned today (Tuesday) and went shall take them to court once circumstances allow," Kasingye said. Adding that, "this will only be possible once prosecutors end their industrial action and go back to court."

The charges stem from the violent clashes that broke out in Rukungiri on Oct 18th, 2017 when Police blocked the FDC leaders and their supporters from accessing Rukungiri stadium for a planned consultative meeting.

The clashes claimed the life of a one Edson and left several other people nursing injuries. There were conflicting reports on how Kakuru met his death. Initially, police claimed that Kakuru was hit to death with a stone.

However, the postmortem report from Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale and Nurse Training School in Rukungiri District and signed by Dr. Julius Luyimbazi, shows that Kakuru was shot on the forehead and bullet exited from the back of the head.
