Government through the ministry of internal affairs has resumed issuance of ordinary passports, at least 2 months of shortage.

In June, the department of Immigration announced that it had run out of ordinary passports, attributing the shortage to an impending plan to migrate from machine readable to electronic passports and an unprecedented increase in demand for ordinary passports.

However, the department announced in Kampala this morning, that normal operations in the issuance of passports have resumed. "Clearance of backlog caused due to low stock has immediately commenced and will be cleared within the next two weeks," reads the statement issued today.

The statement adds that new applications will now take ten working days while Express Applications will take two working days over the next two weeks as the department works around to clear the backlog. But proven emergency passport applications will continue to be given the urgent attention they deserve.
