The national identification and registration authority, NIRA the body charged with registering all Ugandans, is yet to kick start registration of school going pupils in Mukono district.

The three months exercise which kicked off on May 29th across the country has not yet begun in Mukono district, after school head teachers delayed to pick registration forms meant to be used during the project.

According to a source at NIRA who spoke to Howwe.Biz but preferred anonymity, they trained officials to carry out the exercise at the end of May, but, training for head teachers began this morning.

However, in some other parts of the country, NIRA with the Ministry of Education & Sports and other agencies already commenced the exercise to register school learners aged 5-16 years.

Parents and Guardians are encouraged to help fill the forms and provide photocopies of the following documents; either parents’ National ID, copy of the passport for non-citizens or a refugee card for refugees.

Registered students will be given National Identification Numbers. These will be presented to NIRA offices at 16, and receive National IDs.

The registration exercise should end by August, but for Mukono, the authority may be forced to extend the time, as it is likely to start in July.
