Ugandan government has over the last five years with support from development partners made impressive gains in averting the number of new HIV infections and reduction of HIV/AIDS related deaths.

Dr. Christine Ondoa the Director general Uganda AIDS Commission told the press at media centre this afternoon, that there has been a reduction in the number of new HIV infections from about, 140,000 in 2011 to 83,000 by December 2015.

A reduction has also occurred in the numbers of persons dying from AIDS to 28,000 in 2015 from 63,000 in 2011. The number of persons on Antiretroviral treatment has increased from 329,000 in 2011 to 8740,000 by June 2016.

Also, babies born with HIV reduced from 28,000 in 2011 to 3500 by 2015.

“Between 2011 and 2015, Uganda achieved 86% reduction in all new born HIV infections. This impressive reduction has been made possible through a combined strategy spearheaded by the first lady, Janet K. Museveni and other government ministries, agencies and departments and also through partners.

This year, Uganda will join the rest of the World to commemorate the World AIDS day on Dcember 1st, under the theme; “Joining hands to scale up HIV prevention.”

National celebrations will be held in Kalangala.
