Different Bodies of Makerere University to meet and chat means to resolve the current Situation

 

 

 

Makerere university council is today sitting to discuss a way forward after closure of the campus on Tuesday evening by President Yoweri Museveni.

On Wednesday morning, all students were forced to leave campus under supervision of police after the university closed all its gates and directed that nobody is to access it until further notice.

Students in hostels in neighborhood areas were also asked to pack up their belongings and go back to their homes, while international students were asked to seek refuge at their respective embassies.

Following the closure, Prof. Ssentamu Ddumba, the university vice chancellor called a council meeting today to resolve the impasse.

Also, the university convocation under the chairmanship of Dr. Odoi Tanga will be sitting to offer its intellectual support to the university.

Still today, lecturers under their umbrella body of MUASA will hold a meeting to discuss a way forward on their strike.

The lecturers went on strike on Tuesday last week demanding payment of their Salary incentives amounting to 28 Billion shillings. It is for this reason that students too went on strike forcing the president to close the institution.

Meanwhile, students’ leaders led by the university guild president Roy Ssemboga will meet the minister of Education Janet Kataha Museveni to present their grievances and plead with her to find means re-open the university as soon as possible.

Last night, President told the media at the state lodge in Luweero that the campus will soon be opened so students can continue with their studies. He however said there is no money to pay lecturers and that he would not take their protests.
