Makerere University students have this morning gone to strike protesting against the decision by teaching staff to continue with their sit down strike.

Lecturers under their umbrella body of MUASA laid down their tools on Tuesday last week demanding pay of their six months incentives.

. This morning, heavily armed military and Police personal backed with armored cars deployed at the troubled University following a resolution by the Guild Council last night to stage protests because of the anticipated closure of the university due to the ongoing lecturer's strike.

During their meeting on Monday afternoon, lecturers refused to resume teaching until their money is paid, and not even pleas from the Guild President could move them.

The Guild Council Speaker, Imran Kassujja wrote to Engineer Charles Wana-Etyem, asking the university to fulfill its obligations to students.

"The 82nd guild resolved that unconditionally, the university should stay open, and on that note the issue of the closure of the university should not be discussed at any point in the forthcoming emergency meeting scheduled for today 1st November 2016," reads the letter.

By 6:00am, students in various halls of residences were heard chatting patriotic songs ahead of their protest, these would later gather in hundreds at the main building.

Currently, police is using water cannons to disperse the rowdy students who are all over the university, donning their red gowns and ready to fight for their rights.
