As Uganda police prepares to celebrate the Police day on October 3rd, the force has organized to construct 1000 housing units for junior officers to improve their lifestyle.

Addressing the media at Naguru police head offices, police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kawesi said Hon. Okello Oryem, the State minister for internal affairs will preside over the event, while the IGP, Gen. Kare Kayihura will be in attendance.

Every year, the force holds a police week during which a number of social activities are done in collaboration with the community. Kawesi says the housing project will be the first activity in the week that starts tomorrow.

“The first activity is going to be launching officially the police in house capability of improving our accommodation facility that will take place here down in Naguru barracks. We are going to build, 1000 housing units for our lower personnel. The state minister for internal affairs will preside over that ceremony and will unveil the construction process” he explained.

According to the force’s mouthpiece, this is intended to address the challenges of the welfare of the police personnel especially at a family level.

“That is an activity we are launching in this week and we are going to ensure the project succeeds” he added.

Meanwhile, police will also roll out the neighborhood watch concept of community policing in Kitebi, Kabowa parish tomorrow afternoon. This, unlike the first activity, will be presided over by the minister of internal affairs, Gen. Jeje Odong.

“Here we are going to introduce the system of profiling residents in a register which will be at the police station, generating watch list of the people we suspect that are not may be law abiding citizens for police to watch them in support of crime preventers” Kawesi said.

He added that the activity is intended to strengthen the force’s efforts of shifting the policing philosophy from reactive to proactive.
