Today, September 12th 2016 marks a year since former Uganda’s Internal Affairs Minister Gen Aronda Nyakairima, died. 

Aronda died aboard a flight from South Korea to Uganda of cardiac arrest.

Ministry of Internal Affairs officials told the nation that Gen Nyakairima had travelled on official duty and was in a healthy condition.

Born on July 7th 1959, the 56 year old General Aronda Nyakairima was a Ugandan army officer who served in the Cabinet of Uganda as Minister of Internal Affairs since 2013 and previously held the office of Chief of Defence Forces, the highest military rank.

Gen. Aronda was laid to rest on 20th September at his ancestral home in Nyakiju Village, Kitojo parish in Buyanja sub county of Rukungiri district.

President Yoweri Museveni, who was the chief mourner, described Aronda as one of the most disciplined soldiers to emerge out of the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1986.

Today, a memorial lecture in his honor is being held at Makerere University. It is expected to be attended by his family members, friends, work colleagues, and President Yoweri Museveni as well as military officials.

He was described by many as a hardworking and honest man.
