Kamuli woman member of parliament, Rebbeca Alitwala Kadaga has been unanimously elected and sworn in as the speaker of the 10th Parliament.

Kadaga was this morning declared speaker by the deputy chief Justice Steven Kavuma amid cheers and ululations from the members of the house.

She was nominated by the Dokolo woman MP Atim Ogwal Cecilia, and seconded by all members.

The speakership seat was contested for by Kadaga and her former deputy Jacob Oulanya, who would later be asked by the NRM CEC to stand down.

Oulanya is currently fighting with Kampala central MP Hon. Muhammed Nsereko for the deputy speakership.

President Yoweri Museveni made a rare appearance to parliament and administered Rt. Hon. Kadaga’s oath, before handing her the instruments of power.

This is the first time the President has made such an appearance since 1996.
