Ever since the Fifty Shades of Grey series burst onto the scene in 2011, people have been buying sex toys in record numbers to get their kink on, according to new data from the luxury sex toy brand LELO. When they looked at their sales numbers over the last few years, it was clear that the books had a major impact on your bedroom behaviors. [Survey carried in US]

In 2012 alone, sales of whips and teasers increased by more than 50 percent and sales of pleasure beads (like LELO Luna Beads) increased by more than 200 percent! Then, once people were ready to explore past the BDSM trend in 2013, LELO saw sales of couples massagers and wearable toys (like LELO Tor 2) increase by 82 percent. And while sales have remained about the same in 2014, their recent surveys hint that women's attitudes have become much more sexually confident and adventurous over time.

According to one survey, more than half of women in a relationship have created a naked home movie, and over a third have had sex in a public place.

LELO's Head of Marketing Steve Thomson sees a direct correlation between the BDSM books and a surge of experimentation and sexy purchases. "Attitudes towards sex have without a doubt changed as a result of the Fifty Shades phenomenon," he explains in a press release. "People are more curious, exploring more and talking more with their partner about the things they can do to increase intimacy and sexual satisfaction. More couples are open to a little light spanking and BDSM, but for many it's a one off, rather than a regular occurrence in the bedroom."

Whether you're into it or not, it's hard to deny that kink has become way more widespread and more acceptable since the books came out, and if that inspires women to feel more sexually confident, then that's awesome. With the official Fifty Shades of Grey film being released on Valentine's Day 2015, LELO predicts that they'll see another spike in the BDSM goodies. (If the first official trailer is any indication, the ante has already been upped from the books.)
