On Tuesday, the speaker of Parliament put a stop to the Nyege Nyege festival which is set to take place this month at Itanda falls in Jinja District.

The Tororo Woman MP, Hon Sarah Opendi raised the matter asking Parliament to halt the event claiming it is a breeding space for sexual immorality.

Through the Parliament Twitter handle, it reported the speaker explained the event is more harmful to society due to its activities which are in connection with sexual immorality.

"We are talking about the morality of this country; we are talking about our children. You are trying to promote tourism at the expense of our children? We are not going to allow this function to take part," she is quoted.

The ‘Nyege Nyege’ festival is an annual social event that returns this year after close to three years. The festival had been temporarily halted due to COVID-19 restrictions.
