There is a heavy police deployment at Makerere University as the protests against poor meals enter day two.

The strike started on Tuesday after suspension of 15 students over damages caused during a protest against poor food quality a few weeks back.

The students allegedly broke doors, kitchen tables, plates, and caused a loss of 200 forks, they were suspended on Tuesday and are set to face the University’s disciplinary committee any time.

However this did not go down well with their colleagues who claim the move was unfair, and have since shunned meals served at all halls.

The IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura is said to have met with the university guild president last night over student suspensions and strikes but it seems nothing good came out of the meeting.

Students were early this morning seen gathering at University Hall.

Meanwhile, Makerere University Academic Staff have also laid down their tools to demand the payment of their incentives for the past 8 months.

They unanimously resolved to lay down their tools on Tuesday afternoon in a highly charged assembly convened by Makerere University Academic Staff Association-MUASA.

The angry staff laid down their tools at midnight and are not teaching today. The charged men and women rejected pleas by Professor Bernard Nawangwe, the deputy vice Chancellor in Charge Finance and Administration not to go strike. The MUASA members also appointed Dr. James Ocita to join the team that will reinforce MUASA Executive to push for their incentives.

The incentive was to be paid by the administration and collected through the re-alignment of the university budget to exclude allowances for foreign trips, seminars and workshops.

Members of MUASA demand Shillings 28bn from the university for the last 8 months.
