The State minister of Internal Affairs Kania Mario Obiga has this morning launched the project to construct 1000 housing units for junior police officers at Naguru police headquarters.

The project is the first activity in the national police week an annual event that is held ahead of the annual 3rd October Police day celebrations.

During the police week, several activities are be conducted by the force including the launch of neighborhood watch, a new way of community policing, a public lecture on community policing, and exhibitions at the Railway grounds in Kampala where the force is showing their capabilities in crime prevention, firefighting, and traffic roles.

During today’s activities, the IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura requested the Ministry of internal affairs to revise the housing policy of police officers and include cadets/ASP's on the list.

The police boss said that the Cadets' monthly wages are too little for both welfare and renting, explaining that the current policy only allows the force to provide housing units for officers below the level of Assistant inspector of police ASP hence requesting the minister to revise the policy.

According to the IGP, 1000 housing units launched today are not enough, arguing they need at least 10,000 units to settle officers in Kampala alone.

In response, Minister Obiga Kania said the ministry is not only set to solve the housing problem but also the welfare of the police wives and education for their children.
