The police have warned Ugandans on social media against spreading propaganda to incite others, particularly the youth into committing acts of political violence by ordering, requesting, and encouraging them, saying they risk being arrested.

Addressing a presser at Naguru Kamapala this morning, Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson said, the public should know that propaganda is a tool armed squarely at sowing confusion, creating antagonism and division between Ugandans, by fostering hate for others based on their language, religion, citizenship, and other characteristics.

“We have noted people are using the website to publish extreme propaganda crafted to incite the youth to violence offline; which is a dangerous path because of manipulations based on misinformation about current events.” Says Enanga.

He adds; “the police would like to caution the public against such acts of fear mongering and incitement of hatred, cause of the potential to escalate tension for selfish political ends.”

According to Enanga, propaganda is a scourge that must be aggressively controlled by the public, the media and civil society organizations, and others to ensure that it doesn’t overpower objective reporting and information and is not effectively used as a tool for political manipulation and aggression.
