Residents of Katikamwe A village in Kyabugimbi Sub County, Bushenyi district are still in shock, after one of their own Hezekiah Kagate, reportedly used a spear to kill his wife Gladys Kembaga before sending self, six feet under.
According to reports, the 89 year old Kagate locked his 10-year-old grand daughter in the bedroom before ending the life of his 25 year old wife. Moments later, he poisoned himself to death.
According to his daughter who preferred anonymity, the deceased was battling mental illness and was receiving treatment. The daughter added that her father last month told her that he would have loved her to die before him so that he does not leave her suffering.
Maxi Ngabirano, one of the area residents told our reporter that Kagate did not have any history of violence and spent most of his time with the wife or attending prayers at Katikamwe Church of Uganda.
But, last evening when the two met at Mukarere Trading Centre, Kagate revealed that he would not die alone. Ngabirano could not expound on the revelation from the deceased.
Kyabugimbi Sub County Chairperson Elsam Mugizi told our reporter that the incident is shocking to the community which has always looked upon the deceased as a responsible man.
Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson referred to the incident as unfortunate and said that the police are still investigating circumstances surrounding the crime. At the time of filing this story police had sealed off the scene of crime.
Police from Bushenyi police station had arrived at the scene preparing to transport the bodies to Kampala International Hospital - Ishaka branch for postmortem.
