The Uganda Police Professional Standards Unit (P.S.U) is investigating an incident in which some Police officers assaulted members of the Public along the road to Kasangati on Tuesday as they lined up to welcome FDC bigwig Dr. Kiiza Besigye.

The incident came to light through a video linked to local TV station NBS. Deputy police spokesperson Polly Namaye says the Department has already written to the T.V station Management to avail the Police with a copy of the video to enable the investigators identify the officers involved, and evidence of what transpired.

According to Namaye, the video will also help the Police to identify some members of the public who were affected in this particular incident.

“The Police wishes to assure the Public of our commitment in ensuring safety and peacefulness working closely with all Ugandans.”

In a statement released this afternoon, Namaye asked members of the public affected in this incident to make a report to P.S.U by visiting their head office at Bukoto or make a call on telephone numbers 0800300119, 0800199199, 0800199299.

A case file has also been opened up under reference PSU GEF 306/2016.

In the said video, kiboko wielding officers aboard police pickups are seen indiscriminately beating up people who were standing by the roadside waving for Dr. Besigye.

The video was widely shared on social media as the public and human rights activists condemned the action as uncalled for and brutal.
