Businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu and his co-accused have today been sent back to Luzira prison after the state failed to honor its commitment to send them to High Court for trial.

The state had earlier informed court that its investigations into the murder case against Matthew Kanyamunyu, Cynthia Munwangari and Joseph Kanyamunyu would be concluded by today, January 17 to pave way for their trial.

However, when the matter came up this morning, prosecution led by Rachael Nabwire told Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court that investigations were still ongoing before asking for another date to enable them tie the loose ends.

The trio is jointly charged for the death of Human Rights activist Kenneth Watmon Akena, in a shooting at Lugogo Forest Mall, on November 12 last year. It's alleged that Akena had scratched Mathew Kanyamunyu's vehicle, prompting the later to shoot him in vengeance.

But Kanyamunyu denies the allegations saying that they found Akena shot and just helped to carry him to hospital for first aid where they were detained as key suspects.

Presiding Grade One Magistrate Noah Sajjabbi adjourned the matter to January 31. The suspects were then returned to Luzira prison until then. Last week, high court judge Elizabeth Kabanda declined to release the trio suspects on bail on grounds that they did not present exceptional circumstances like old age and ill health to warrant their release on bail as it's demanded with all capital offenses.

It's prosecution's case that the Kanyamunyu's murdered child a human rights worker Kenneth Akena on November 12th 2016.
