One person is dead and three others have been injured following an attack by political rivals in Mbale.

Police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Kevin Khabala, a resident of Nasasa village in Bumbobi Sub County in Mbale District and supporter of the incumbent Bumbobi Sub County LC V councilor, Peter Mweru.

According to available reports, Khabala breathed his last at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital where he was rushed this morning after sustaining injuries in an attack by the supporters of Mweru’s rival, David Mutsisa. 

The deceased was riding a motorcycle together with three other people at around 1 am this morning when they were attacked while were distributing appointment letters to Mweru’s polling agents.

They were ambushed at Nasasa-Mungoma road junction and assaulted by a group of youths armed with machetes and clubs, which they had hidden in the nearby cassava plantation.

According to Brain Buyola one of the survivors, the area LC I chairperson was allegedly part of the group that ambushed them.

Candidate Peter Mweru says he had just completed a planning meeting with his supporters on how to manage the polling day only to be called that some of his supporters had been injured in an attack.

The Officer in Charge of Nabumali Police station Olive Namudoola, two suspects have been arrested in connection to the attack.

Namudoola says supporters of the rival camp met at a junction and started clashing.
