NUP Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi has not been arrested, but rather restrained from holding massive rallied in Kalangala district, where he was supposed to campaign today.

Uganda police Force has clarified that the National Unity Platform, NUP Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi has not been arrested, but rather restrained from holding massive rallied in Kalangala district, where he was supposed to campaign today. 

"Please disregard false claims by NUP and other social media platforms that Hon.Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert has been arrested, while on his campaign trail in Kalangala District" a police statement says.

Police noted that they restrained Kyagulanyi foe continuously holding such large rallies amidst the increased threats of coronavirus, in total disregard of the Electoral commission and Ministry of Health guidelines.

Kyagulanyi is currently being transferred to his home in Magere, Kampala after being airlifted from Kalangala.

"Part of his advance team, captured on Cctv cameras and several video footages, while deflating tyres of police motor vehicles , inciting violence, obstructing police officers on duty, violating the health and safety protocols and various traffic offences, have been arrested for further statement recording" police added. 

News of Kyagulanyi's arrest was broken by the NUP team. Several journalists were also briefly detained, cautioned and later released.
