The police in Kampala is investigating circumstances under which their own officer shot and killed a citizen journalist in Rubaga, Kampala. 

The deceased has been identified as David Kibuuka a resident and village publicist of Ssembule area in Rubaga.

According to a statement released by Luke Owoyesigire the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson this afternoon, the incident occurred at around 10:30am this morning when police was responding to an illegal protest at a factory over closure of a community road.

“Police officers from Kironde police post led by in charge Justus Bwire responded to the incident to restore peace. It is alleged that residents refused to leave the area despite police orders. One of the police officers fired bullets to disperse the protesters. In the process, David Kibuuka a resident and village publicist was shot and inujured” Owoyesigire said.

Kibuuka was later pronounced at Mulago national referral hospital where police officers rushed him after the incident. Owoyesigire says investigations into the matter have already commenced.

Police has since arrested ASP Justus Bwire the officer who led the operation and he is currently being detained at Old Kampala police division as investigations continue.

Police has sent officers back to the scene to collect more evidence.
