Sterling: Why I turned down £100,000 a week
Some have suggested that Sterling and his representatives are simply holding out for even more money, although the 20-year-old has insisted this is not true and does not want to "be perceived as a money-grabber".
The longer he refuses to sign a new deal, however, the more rumours swirl around that he is simply looking to run his contract down in the hope big clubs will come calling and offer ridiculous amounts of money. The fact he called supposed interest from Arsenal "quite flattering" has not helped matters.
And Scholes, who came up through the ranks at Old Trafford and, thanks to the support and stability offered by the club, flourished into one of the best midfielders in the world, believes Anfield is the best place for the young winger.
Brendan Rodgers is keen to keep hold of Sterling
He wrote in The Independent: "When it comes to his future, my view is that Sterling should stay at Liverpool. They have elevated him from the junior sides and he has a manager who has built a team around him. He plays every week. What more do you need at that age?
"Sterling is a good player. He can beat a man and, on his day, looks impressive. But he doesn't score enough goals, not yet anyway.
"You have to be careful when you time a move to one of the biggest clubs.
"Occasionally, these young players do not realise what a good thing they are on to when they know they will be playing every week."
