The national association of broadcasters (NAB) has this morning met to discuss the implementation of the 2% levy on broadcaster gross revenue by the regulator, Uganda communications commission (UCC).

The chairman NAB, Kin Kariisa argues that they received notice to submit their audited financial statements for the last three financial years in order for the commission to invoice them for payment of the 2% levy on gross revenue.

According to Kariisa, the 2% levy is absurd and too much especially for new broadcasters who are just setting up media outlets.

“We are aware of the provisions in the law and hereby propose a meeting between UCC, and National Asssociation of Broadcasters to elucidate various broadcaster issues,” says Kariisa.

Former NAB chairman, Edward Babu Francis says UCC is being unfair, and such a high levy will lead to a reduction of salaries of people employed by the affected media outlets, who amount to over 7000.

Mr. Babu calls upon broadcasters to come together and agree on a way forward so as to save their companies.

NAB is a collective voice of Uganda radio, television and online broadcasters. It is duly registered as an association and recently signed a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Uganda Communications Commission.
