If you think you know how to put on lipstick, it's only because you have never seen Amber Rose do it. She applies it with a careful, seamless swipe so mesmerizing that all the other women in the makeup trailer stare in silent awe, then launch into an effusive praise-fest for the color in question — MAC Ruby Woo.
We're in the parking lot of a somewhat dilapidated movie theater in North Hollywood, where Rose is about to film a pre-recorded sketch with Amy Schumer for the MTV Movie Awards. Also on the premises is a brown Shetland pony, but Rose isn't sure whether or not it will feature in her bit. (It will, along with a woman wearing a trench coat full of phallic vegetables.) In the next trailer over, Rose's two assistants are waiting with at least six pairs of sunglasses for their boss to sample before she goes to set. Her publicist estimates that she has "thousands" more at home.
Rose first found fame, at least by association, several years ago as a "girlfriend of," appearing on the arm of Kanye West from 2009 to 2010, then beginning her relationship with Wiz Khalifa in 2011. Though Rose and Khalifa have spent the past eight months or so going through a public split, it's through Rose's relationship with West, and by extension the Kardashians, that she became a regular in your newsfeeds. In February, Rose found herself in the middle of a full-scale social media war after she told NYC radio station Power 105.1 that Kylie Jenner is a "baby" who "needs to go to bed at seven o'clock and relax." If you watch the whole interview, you can see that her ire seems mostly directed at Tyga, Kylie's rumored boyfriend, for ending his engagement to Rose's friend Blac Chyna, but that didn't stop Khloé Kardashian from tearing into Rose on Twitter or West from saying that he had to "take 30 showers" before dating Kim after Rose.
