Every gal has her own unique hotspots, so the moves that make one woman wild may drive another one nuts. However, sexperts say there’s one act that practically all ladies loathe: Fingering like you’re digging for change in a coin jar.

“If you dive in there and start rooting around without any technique, you could actually end up hurting her,” warns Emily Morse, sexologist and host of the Sex with Emily podcast. “That’ll put a quick stop to things, before they have even technically gotten started.”

Sure, fumbling around down there might have worked in ninth grade, but you’re not in high school anymore—and women want a man with a firm knowledge of what to do with his fingers.

“If a guy doesn’t know how to use his hands, women assume that he won’t know how to use his other appendages very well either,” Morse says.

The main problem: Her vagina is super-sensitive to scrapes and scratches, so your well-intentioned poking can wind up doing more harm than good.

So how can you give her a helping hand? Start by making sure your nails are trimmed and well-groomed. Then take things slow. Stroke her thighs first, and slowly make your way to her clitoris, where the top of the inner vaginal lips meet, Morse says. Light, circular movements just above the sweet spot work well on most women, she says, and a touch of lube can help.

For many women, it’s easier to orgasm here than from G-spot stimulation, Morse says, so you may want to stay put. But if she wants you to venture inside, gently bend your fingers toward her belly button. You should feel an area of flesh that’s a little rougher to the touch. Stroke that area with different degrees of pressure, starting very gently, Morse advises. She’ll let you know when you hit her jackpot.
