The police have this afternoon fired teargas and live bullets in attempt to stop the National Unity Platform-NUP party President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and his supporters from driving to Bulange in Mengo.
The dramatic scenes happened at Wandegeya after the High Court Civil Division judgment that threw out a petition challenging the acquisition of National Unity, Reconciliation and Development-NURP and its leadership.
Kyagulanyi had set out to Mengo for a meeting with the Katikiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, with his supporters cheering on in huge crowds. This forced heavily armed Field force Unity FFU, LDU’s and Military police to cut them off at Wandegeya traffic lights and Makerere main gate.
The officers’ first attempts to stop the group from proceeding to Bulange were in vain, prompting them to use live bullets and teargas to try and disperse them as some officers also tried to drag Kyagulanyi from his vehicle at Makerere University main gate leading to a struggle with his bodyguards.
At this point, a section of his supporters joined the bodyguards to protect Kyagulanyi and overpowered the security officers who had wanted to arrest, and he later managed to get his way to Bulange.
Police remain tight lipped on the incident.
Earlier today, Police political commissar Asan Kasingye led a delegation to Bulange Mengo to apologize on behalf of the IGP Okoth Ochola, over the Saturday incident in Mityana, where a group of subjects belonging to mbogo clan were holding a celebration which was interrupted by police. Kasingye visited and apologized to retired Bishop of Mityana B Kaggwa over the same matter.
