Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has Thursday appointed Doreen Nyanjura to the position of Deputy Lord Mayor, replacing Hajjat Sarah Kanyike who has been nominated for appointment as Director Gender, Community Development and Production.
According to Lukwago, the law indicates that one cannot serve in two offices at the same time, indicating that the office of the Lord Mayor is full time and so is the office of the director in charge of Gender, which Kanyike was nominated to fill.
Hajjat Sarah Kanyike has been deputy Lord Mayor since June 2016. She has previously served as a personal assistant in charge of administration in the office of the Lord Mayor.
Addressing the media in Kampala today, an evidently disappointed Lukwago reminisced all the good time the duo shared at his office and how she too was kicked out during his impeachment, only for her to return as a counselor representing Makindye East, and he subsequently appoint her, his deputy.
The Lord Mayor says he received Kanyike’s resignation letter on Thursday morning at 11:00am.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, for allowing me to work with you as Deputy Lord Mayor of Kampala Capital City Authority, I appreciate the cordial working relationship I shared with you, and the opportunities for growth and development you have provided to me during my tenure. It has been my pleasure to work with you, and the team at large” part of the resignation letter read.
Subsequently, Lukwago appointed Nyanjura as Deputy Lord Mayor under section 9 and 10 of the KCCA Act. He noted that the appointment followed thorough consultations and that a consensus was reached amongst various stakeholders including members of the KCCA cabinet.
Nyanjura is currently the councilor representing Makerere University and a member of Makerere University Council. She is also formerly a deputy guild president Makerere University.
On Monday 22nd June 2020, Nyanjura will be presented before council as Deputy Lord Mayor.
