The campaign camp of Basalirwa has vowed to treat their FDC counterparts as enemies after they learnt of schemes by the latter.
Last night, police and other security operatives rounded up members of the Basalirwa’s campaign team in Bugiri. According to Samuel Lubega the Secretary of Basalirwa’s campaign taskforce, the operatives picked 16 members of the team including Alex Waiswa from DP, Tumuhairwe Dennis UYD secretary Kampala and an aide of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi, Lukwago Ramadhan, Ssekaja (Basalirwa’s lawyer), Ssenyange Joseph, Kim Njuba another Bobi Wine aide, Roy Ssemboga former Makerere University guild president, Andrew Natumanya among others.
The campaign team calls the events unfortunate. Lubega says their campaign has been attacked severally including on Thursday last week. The campaign accuses FDC of working together with NRM and FDC.
It is said that the FDC candidate together with Hon. Wafula Ogutu were meeting NRM leaders (Min. Persis Namuganza and Kahinda Otafiire) to forge a way to beat the JEEMA party leader Asuman Basalirwa.
The campaign also accuses the electoral commission of not doing its work since there is voter buying evidently supported by police which mans gates while the campaigns distribute money.
Bobi Wine’s hotel and Basalirwa’s home were by this morning still surrounded by security operatives. “Heavily armed security prersonnel have surrounded my home and planet hotel where Bibi Wine and Hon. Zaake Mutebi are residing. They are currently forcing their way into the rooms” the candidate said.
Bobi Wine, Dr. Kiiza Besigye and President Yoweri Museveni are all set to campaign in Bugiri for their respective candidates ahead of Friday elections.
Bobi Wine tweeted this morning that “Our hotel in Bugiri has been raided by the military and policed. Several of my team members are arrested and more being forced to open their rooms.
The MP race has attracted five contestants including Asuman Basalirwa JEEMA, NRM’s John Francis Oketcho, FDC’S Eunice Namatende, Hajji Siraji Lyavala and Joel Wamono both indwependent candidates. Bugiri is one of the new municipalities that came into effect on July 1.
