One person has been confirmed dead in a tanker explosion that happened along the Mpondwe-Lhibiriha border point in Kasese District on Tuesday afternoon.
It is reported that the tanker carrying spirit used in making alcohol rammed into the Ebola/Covid-19 screening unit at Mpondwe border point after failing to brake before it exploded into flames.
The isolation unit was burnt down, while an unidentified person of Congolese origin who was also the co-driver in the truck died.
According to eyewitnesses, the tanker was heading to DR Congo but its brakes failed shortly after passing the URA offices in Mpondwe and rammed into the screening unit.
Three other women are reported to have been rushed to hospital with burns but there is a possibility that more people were injured in the explosion.
Ismail Kaawo the Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson says investigations into the accident have commenced.
