A conflict is brewing in in Abim district where about 300 residents from Amita Parish have accused Amita Prison authorities of illegally occupying their land.

According to the angry residents who are being led by one Rev. Caleb Omwony the LCIII Chairperson of Abim Sub County, over 2,000 acres of their land were allegedly lost when they were reportedly forced out of the area due to insecurity.

Rev. Omwony also claims that the land belonging to three sub-clans of Kalio, Watangole and Kapwor in Abim Sub County was grabbed in 1972 and though they earlier sought dialogue with the prison authorities in an attempt to reclaim the said land, the request fell on deaf ears. The families are seeking compensation.

In 1948, he reveals that the community donated some land to the prisons authorities but the latter extended boundaries leaving about 300 people from Arengebwola, Loima parishes landless. Omwony now says that the community may have no option but to seek redress from the courts of law.

However, Alfred Nuwatuha the Officer in Charge of Amita Prison described the claims by Omwony as baseless noting that they have a land title for the land in Amita.

Nuwatuha advised him to request prison authorities through legal procedures to assist the community with part of the land on a humanitarian basis due to population pressure.
