Five members of National Unity Platform –NUP who were arrested by the police in Kasese have been charged plotting to overthrow the government. 

The five are identified as Bryan Basisa, the NUP Kasese District Chairperson; Geoffrey Bwambale, the NUP coordinator for Bundibugyo; Atanazio Isanat from Ntoroko district; Isaac Mumbere-NUP flag bearer for Nyamwamba Division in Kasese in the last general elections and Oniz Kule a boda boda rider from Hima Town.
They were arrested by security operatives on Tuesday from Kamaiba Lower, Kamaiba Ward in Kasese Municipality.

According to ASP Ismail Kaawo the acting Rwenzori east Police spokesperson the five are charged with a count of trying to overthrow a legitimate government after finding them with documents calling for an uprising.

Kaawo says that security is also scrutinizing other several  documents they found with the group but was hesitant to divulge there details, adding that police are finalizing its investigations and the suspects would soon be presented before court to answer the charge. 

He noted that whereas its legitimate for Ugandans to show their discontent, it must be done through proper channels and with the guidance of security forces especially the police. 

According to Emmanuel Kirunda the lawyer representing the suspects, police has since Tuesday denied him access to his clients. 

On Thursday, police warned against looming riots organized by NUP and Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s new front that are planned for Monday next week.
