11 children on board a taxi suspected to be trafficking them from Napak district in the Karamoja region to Kampala have been rescued by Police.

Police officers intercepted the taxi at the checkpoint in Iriiri sub-county last night.

According to Guard Murungi Napak the District Police Commander, the children aged between 9 and 14 were picked from Matany Town Council. However, Police received information from residents who saw young children boarding the taxi without their parents.

Murungi says the taxi driver jumped out and took off, abandoning the car registration number UBJ 438R which operates along the Soroti-Moroto route.
"When he saw the police ready for him, he didn't even reach the checkpoint. He parked the taxi and took off to the bush leaving eleven children on board," Murungi said.

Adding that the police is yet to extract information from the children to ascertain how they were mobilised, where they were heading and who their parents are.
The owner of the Motorvehicle and the driver are also being pursued to face charges of aiding child trafficking.
