The Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), a youth wing of the Democratic Party, DP has petitioned Court against the Swearing in Ceremony of the President elect, H.E Yoweri Museveni set for 12th May 2021.

According to Kirya Ismail the Chairman UYD, the organization maintains its stand that president Museveni did not win the elections and not eligible to be sworn in.
“However, it is absurd to organize such a would-be National function in this period of global pandemic uncertainty given that the Indian Covid-19 variant has been reportedly detected leading to the closure of an International school.  As a country we don't have the health capacity to handle such complicated cases should it resurface in the surge of anticipations” Kirya says.

Adding that the swearing in ceremony will expose and position Ugandans to a very high risk given the fact that over 20 foreign heads of state some from countries flagged off as high risk have been invited.

He argued that the new COVID 19 variant is said to be more deadly to young people below 35 years, who make over 70% of Uganda’s population and whose interests UYD represents.

“Unless the Minister of Health Hon Jane Ruth Acheng lied to the nation that the Indian variant of Covid 19 was also detected in Uganda, the country can't risk organizing such nature of event under prevailing health circumstances attracting in people from countries affected by the said variant” he further argued.

Kirya says that basing on the above, the Uganda Young Democrats is seeking for a court injunction stopping the purported swearing in ceremony of Dictator Yoweri Museveni as it will expose the young people, who are majority of the population to the new COVID 19 Variant whose impact may deprive the pearl of Africa of its future generation.

“We thus appeal to the organizers of this purported swearing in function to reconsider their decision and immediately cancel it in order to safeguard the lives of Ugandans at stake. For their own safety, we also request the foreign dignitaries from outside the country planning to grace the ceremony to consider cancellation of their trips because the dictator is anointing himself and Uganda has registered the Indian Covid-19 variant which our health system clearly lacks the capacity to handle” he added.

Kirya assured Ugandans that UYD has both the intellectual and physical capacity to deal with issues that put the lives of young people, whose interests they represent at stake in order to safeguard the future generation.
